How A Change In Business Strategy Has Secured International Success For Mundo

MundoManchester based Mundo has recently launched its new online shop,, giving the public the opportunity to purchase football inspired clothing. Paul Codd, joint founder of the business, gives an insight into the journey the business has taken. We have come a long way since our humble beginnings in Manchester’s Afflecks Palace, which started with a single shop selling other brands and buying and selling second hand retro shirts.

After a short time we found that this was not the right place to be as we were not meeting our target audience and as a result our turnover was suffering. We only ever met students and people with a gothic persuasion, certainly not your average football fan!

Our next step was to launch a new store in Manchester’s Arndale Centre, and create a brand, something neither my business partner nor I had done before. We integrated ourselves in to the world of fashion and sourced factories to manufacture our designs. We ensured that we sourced quality fabrics to give us a point of difference from anyone else in the market. All of our t-shirts are made using brushed cotton.

We started to find having the store highly stressful, with high rent and business rates we were only just breaking even. We worked 7 months without a day off. Then something clicked in my mind. When the shop was having its quieter moments we were contacting high street department stores to see if they would consider stocking our product. As a result we secured our first deal with House of Fraser.

We quickly realised that we did not necessarily require a retail presence to make the business even more profitable, closed the Arndale store and re located to an office in the Northern Quarter.

Two years later we are now stocked in House of Fraser, The National Football Museum for six months and about to partner with several leading online retailers. Success has taken us overseas with products available in Italy, Denmark, Cyprus and Singapore. So, we have indeed come a long way from those days in Afflecks Palace to meeting famous footballers to seeing famous bands such as the Vaccines and Kid British wearing our products.
